Social problems are becoming increasingly complex and nonprofits need a business model that utilizes market-based strategies for addressing and ideally alleviating these problem. Earned income is a strategy that nonprofits are seeing as a way to increase revenue by offering a product or service to address social problems.

Dr. Bernard Turner started the first undergraduate major in social entrepreneurship in the nation. Students are trained to be the next generation of change agents in the social sector. He is a strong advocate for the social enterprise model and experiential learning is a major focus of his academic program.
